In South Carolina, any vehicle displaying a valid Handicap Placard, Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans or Medal of Honor license tag, or a valid and official handicapped hang tag, may park for free at any public-operated parking meter.
Placards are available to persons who have been certified as disabled by a licensed physician. To apply, you must have a current driver's license, beginner permit or identification card photo on file with SCDMV. If a photo is not on file, you must apply for one before a placard can be issued.
You must complete the Organization Placard and/or License Plate for People who have a Disability (SCDMV Form RG-007B). It is $1 per placard.
If you are a permanent placard holder, you can renew your Disabled Parking Placard online. If a licensed doctor certified that you have a disability, you are eligible for a license plate.
Customers can make application for disabled placards in any SCDMV branch office, but the placard itself will be processed at SCDMV headquarters and issued to customers by mail within 10 business days of application.
