The exam is written on one day, with a three (3) hour morning session and a three (3) hour afternoon session. The AEMCA exam is composed of multiple choice questions which pertain to various scenarios based on actual ambulance calls.

There are three levels of a paramedic in Ontario; Primary Care Paramedic ( PCP ), Advanced Care Paramedic ( ACP ) and Critical Care Paramedic ( CCP ). Specific controlled acts for the various levels of paramedics are listed in the Schedules of Ontario Regulation 257/00 as made under the Ambulance Act.
Currently, paramedics in Ontario who work for any of the 51 municipal paramedic services are regulated under the Ambulance Act (1990) and Regulations. The acts they can perform and the standards of performance are supervised by one of the eight Base Hospital Programs, which are funded by and accountable to MOHLTC.
