On October 4, 2024, the Honorable Jennifer Walker Elrod of Houston, Texas, becomes the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which hears appeals from federal courts in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.
Today, the courts home is the John Minor Wisdom United States Court of Appeals Building in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1981, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Reorganization Act divided the court and created a new circuit.
There are 13 judicial circuits, each with a court of appeals. The smallest court is the First Circuit with six judgeships, and the largest court is the Ninth Circuit, with 29 judgeships. A list of the states that compose each circuit is set forth in Title 28 of the U.S. Code, Section 41.
Appeals of family law cases, probate cases, juvenile cases, felony cases, and civil cases for more than $35,000 are heard in the Court of Appeal. In each Court of Appeal, a panel of 3 judges, called justices, decides appeals from trial courts.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit was established in 1891 and is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The court has appellate jurisdiction over courts in the following districts: Eastern District of Louisiana.
