In order to comply with Pennsylvania legislation (ACT 153), your position requires that you secure a new Act 33 Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance every 60 months.
Clearances/Background Checks The following three background checks are required: Department of Human Services Child Abuse History Clearance. Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check. Federal Criminal History Record Information (CHRI)
All volunteers working with children in the state of Pennsylvania are required to submit three clearances: PA child abuse clearance, PA criminal background check, and FBI clearance. Fortunately, the first two are free for volunteers and can be done online.
Act 151 of 1994 specified that employees of public schools, hired as of July 1, 1996, must undergo background checks for child or student abuse.
Clearances are valid for one year and cannot turn one year old during a semester. Renewed clearances must be submitted annually. Please note that TB tests must always be dated within 90 days of the first day in the field.

The passing of Act 4 aligns the School Code with the new CPSL requirement and permits any of the three required background checks to be used by potential applicants for up to 5 years (i.e., 60 months). Currently, background check results are stored in the PA Safe Check Systems for five years.
