On some airlines, these procedures are required for unaccompanied children as old as 14.
You are actually able to escort the minor child or a person with a disability to the gate. At the check-in counter, you will have to ask for an escort pass to allow this to happen. You are still required to go through TSA like any other passenger. Just something to keep in mind.
