Through the states Hazlewood Act, originally approved in 1943, Texas promises its veterans or their survivors 150 free credit hours at any of the states public universities or community colleges, once their federal benefits have been exhausted.
The Hazlewood benefit is a state exemption offered to Texas Veterans and under the Hazlewood Legacy program the eligible veteran may assign their hours to a dependent child.
In order to be eligible to receive a Hazlewood Act Exemption, a veteran must demonstrate that he or she was a Texas resident at the time of entry into military service, entered the service in the State of Texas, or declared Texas as his/her Home of Record at the time of entry as indicated on his/her DD214.
Answer: Veterans (eligible for Hazlewood) who have/have not used their Hazlewood benefit may transfer their unused hours (up to 150 SCH) to a child.
