Special Olympics is a global organization that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year.
Special Olympics athletes must also undergo a preparticipation physical examination by a licensed examiner every three years.
Special Olympics athletes are people who are 8 years old or older and who have an intellectual disability. There is no upper age limit, and in fact, nearly one-third of our athletes are age 22 or older. Our 30-plus sports are seasonal, so some are winter sports and some are summer sports.
All competitors in these sport classes have to fulfil the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of intellectual disability: An IQ below 75. Impairment in adaptive functioning - for example, social, domestic and communication skills. The disability must have occurred before the age of 18.
Special Olympics works with world leaders at the highest levels of government, health care, education and business, holding symposia and meetings that focus on the well-being of people with intellectual disabilities. Those contacts, coupled with our research findings, help shape public policy to effect social change.
