No, the DAR is not a political organization, nor does it lobby. DAR is a patriotic society composed of members who subscribe to different political philosophies.
Cameo Society Goals It is a fellowship of ladies who share a common bond of membership in the DAR to: Promote understanding and fellowship between generations. Encourage the passage of genealogical information, family histories, and patriotism to subsequent generations.
Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible to join the DAR. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage and death, as well as of the Revolutionary War service of her Patriot ancestor.
In addition to Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul, suffragists Mary Garrett Hay, Julia Ward Howe, Belva Lockwood, Harriet Taylor Upton, Sue Shelton White and Frances Willard were DAR members.
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer womens service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
