HOW DOES THE SUPREME COURT DECIDE WHICH CASES TO HEAR? As stated earlier, the Louisiana Supreme Court must hear all cases involving disciplinary actions against lawyers and judges, all cases in which a law or ordinance has been declared unconstitutional, and all capital cases where the death penalty has been imposed.
The Building at 400 Royal Street. The Louisiana Supreme Court was first housed at Government House in New Orleans until approximately the 1820s. The Court then moved to the very crowded Presbytre, in which city offices and city and state courts in New Orleans were located.
The document in the image is authentic in the sense that it reflects a real incident: the Louisiana Supreme Court displayed a seal with Louisiana misspelled as Lousiana during a Bar Admissions ceremony in October 2024. The court acknowledged the error, which was due to artwork provided by an outside entity.
The Supreme Court has a traditional seal, which is similar to the Great Seal of the United States, but which has a single star beneath the eagles claws symbolizing the Constitutions creation of one Supreme Court. The Seal of the Supreme Court of the United States is kept in the custody of the Clerk of the Court
In 1902 the governor of Louisiana gave the first official description of the great seal. The seal bears the same design of a pelican as on the flag, except that here the state motto, Union, Justice, Confidence, encircles the scene instead of running below it. This seal has been in use since about 1804.
