As a guideline, try to assign each guard to an area that can be effectively scanned in 10 seconds and where victims can be reached in about 20 seconds. This is known as the 10/20 rule. Ask lifeguards to count or track swimmers in their zones and pay particular attention to weak or struggling swimmers.
The 10/20 Protection Rule provides the guideline our lifeguards follow for protecting pool patrons. This rule states that the lifeguard has 10 seconds to scan their Zone of Protection and recognize a swimmer in distress and then has 20 seconds to rescue that victim.
To aid in maintaining our 10/20 standard we also implement a five-minute rule. This is the practice of every five minutes, having our guards stand up out of their current position, actively scanning their zone with their hand, and clearing their zone if they find no guest in distress at any level of their zone.
Some estimates indicate that the chance of drowning at a beach protected by lifeguards can be less than one in 18 million.
This is where lifeguards step in. Lifeguards assume a huge responsibility of keeping swimmers safe. ing to the International Lifesaving Federation reports, certified lifesavers and lifeguards rescue over 1,000,000 lives each year. Its not an easy job when a thousand lives depend on you every day.
