Olympic swimming takes place inside a 50-meter-long pool divided into eight lanes. Swimmers race each other at distances varying from 50m (one lap) to 1500m (30 laps) using one of four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly (medley events use all four).
Master swim workouts include all 4 strokes. Distance usually ranges 1500-2000 yards. Minimum requirements for an adult to join this program are: must be able to swim two consecutive lengths of the front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.
This program provides organized workouts, competitions, clinics and workshops for adults. Masters Swim is a blend of fitness and competitive swimming for adults 18 and older. The structured workouts use techniques of interval training with a focus on fun, fitness and friendship.
Heres your breakdown: 1 Mile (1,760 yards): 70.4 lengths. Swimming Mile (1,650 yards): 66 lengths. 1500 meters (~1,640 yards): ~60 lengths. 800 meters (~875 yards): 32 lengths. 200 meters (~219 yards): ~8 lengths.
Most USMS meets do not have prelims but rather timed final races. In other words, if you enter an event, you only swim it once. No matter how you finish in your heat, your result is based upon how you compared to all swimmers in your age group in the event, regardless of whether they swam with you in the heat.

What is Masters Swimming? These sessions give swimmers the opportunity to participate in coached workouts as part of a like-minded group of swimmers. A coached workout is not about exercising aimlessly, but instead involves swimming different sets using various strokes to improve your technique and stamina.
If they could continue to swim at these speeds they would complete 50 yards in 12.5 sec. The average 25 sec. per 50 yd. masters swimmers hits the water at around 5.7 miles per hour (8.3 ft/sec.)
When it comes to establishing endurance for triathlon swimming, the Goldilocks number is 300. Whether meters or yards, swimming 300 is not too long, not too short its just right.
