The Certificate of Eligibility is a statement that the Godmother and Godfather are members in good standing in the parish in which they worship and that they are competent to act as godparent/sponsor. The Church has established the following norms governing the qualifications needed to be a Godparent.
In with Canon 874 of the Code of Canon Law, the Church can admit a person to the role of Sponsor if, He or she is not less than 14 years of age. He or she is a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the blessed Eucharist and lives a life of faith which befits the role to be undertaken.
According to Canon law, the godparent or sponsor must be at least 16 years of age, belong to the Catholic Church and have been fully initiated in the Church by receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
These official Church of England certificates for Godparents are designed to be given as a reminder of the promises made on behalf of their godchild.
In many parishes, a sponsor form or affirmation form will be given to the person that is being asked to become a godparent. It is asked that the form will be brought to the godparents registered parish to be signed and sealed with the churchs official stamp/seal.
