eCFR :: 14 CFR 65.91 -- Inspection authorization. (FAR 65.91)
The Inspection Authorization (IA) Course: All Inspection Authorization candidates must pass the FAAs IA Knowledge Written Exam. Our Five day course starts every Monday. Our comprehensive program provides the applicant with all the information required to pass and score highly on the IA Knowledge test.
Who Can Perform the Inspection: Only a certified mechanic with an Inspection Authorization (IA) can perform annual inspections. A certified AP mechanic (Airframe and Powerplant) can conduct 100-hour inspections, but an IA is not required.
The 100-hour inspection is required for aircraft: That carry any person (other than a crew member) for hire; or. That are provided by any person giving flight instruction for hire.
100 Hours In Flight This inspection is identical in many ways to the annual inspection that all aircraft are subject to as well, with the sole difference being that annual inspections can only be conducted by airframe and power plant (AP) mechanics with specific inspection authorization.

A 100-hour inspection would be required if the aircraft is used to carry passengers for hire, or if that aircraft is used for flight training and the instructor or the flight school provides that aircraft. Student-owned or club-operated aircraft generally do not require the 100-hour inspections.
65.92 Inspection authorization: Duration. (1) The authorization is surrendered, suspended, or revoked. (2) The holder no longer has a fixed base of operation. (3) The holder no longer has the equipment, facilities, and inspection data required by 65.91(c) (3) and (4) for issuance of his authorization.
