Radiologists are one of the few specialists that primary care physicians consult when coming up with a diagnosis. Neuroradiologists are radiologists that have further certification and training in treating abnormalities in the central and peripheral nervous system, spine, head and neck.
Radiologists can make diagnoses and recommend treatment. Those who specialize in interventional radiology may also perform or assist in surgeries. If they specialize in radiation oncology, they can oversee radiation therapy in cancer treatment.
The UCSF Neuroradiology Fellowship Program currently offers three pathways for candidates interested in fellowship-level training. All require one (post-residency) year of ACGME neuroradiology fellowship training, with ten accredited ACGME slots available per year.
+ Neuroradiologists interpret x-rays, magnetic resonance images (MRI), and computed tomography (CT) scans of the brain, spine and spinal cord, face and neck, and peripheral nerves. They also perform angiographic studies of the brain and spine and interpret the findings.
Diagnostic radiology encompasses a variety of diagnostic and image guided therapeutic techniques, including all aspects of radiological diagnosis (nuclear radiology, diagnostic ultrasound, magnetic resonance, computed tomography, interventional procedures, and the use of other forms of radiant energy).
