Hear this out loud PauseJust know that you will be fine. First, see if you can retake the qualifiers. Second, see what went wrong and make sure it doesnt happen again. Third, if you have to leave the program, consider whether you want to continue pursue your PhD elsewhere or go to industry.
A student is allowed only one retake of the Qualifying Exam. A student who fails the retake will be dismissed from the program. Students may appeal a decision by the Qualifying Examination Committee to the parent Steering Committee, by making this request in writing to the associate dean for graduate programs.
Hear this out loud PauseThe purpose of a PhD qualifying exam is to evaluate whether the student has adequate knowledge of the discipline and whether the student is eligible of conducting original research. This qualifying exam is a bridge that transforms a PhD student into a PhD candidate.
If you are unsuccessful in being awarded a PhD, an MPhil may be awarded instead. For this to happen, your work would need to be considered worthy of an MPhil, as although it is a Masters degree, it is still an advanced postgraduate research degree.
Hear this out loud Pause Meet with each committee member, if possible, to acquaint them with what you are about, and more importantly, find out their views and perspectives.  Prepare a 10 minute talk to be delivered at the outset of the Candidacy.  Rehearse the talk and DO NOT exceed the time allocation.

Some questions will be deceptively easy. Some questions will be hard. If you already know what they are asking, good committee members will continue asking you more questions (perhaps on the sametopic, perhaps on a different topic) until they find something with which youre unfamiliar.
Hear this out loud PauseThe PhD qualifying exam varies by institution and discipline, but they all share something in common: they are among the most difficult tests you will ever take. A PhD qualifying exam is given after you completed your coursework. It is the final hurdle before you begin to work on your dissertation.
However, if you fail the exam by unanimous decision of all committee members who oppose you from taking the reexam, you may have to leave the program and opt for another field of study or university.
