To sit for the Utah Bar Exam, you must have a Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited law school. You must also be a US citizen, a permanent resident, or otherwise authorized to work in the US. Additionally, all applicants must pass a character and fitness evaluation.
You must obtain your first professional law degree, a Juris Doctor (JD) (also known as a Doctor of Jurisprudence) before taking the Utah bar exam. Your school may offer other options in addition to the JD, including concentrations and dual degrees.
Rules governing admission are prescribed by the Utah Court Rules governing the Utah State Bar. All applicants should have attained at least 21 years of age. Applicants should have graduated with a first professional degree in law, juris doctorate or Bachelor of Laws, or equivalent degree from an approved law school.
Overall, Utah is the easiest bar exam to pass. This is true whether you are a first-time taker or repeat taker! In July 2023, Utah had a 94% pass rate for first time takers and a 73% pass rate for repeat takers. It also has the lowest UBE cut score of 260.
An Applicant must receive a total combined scaled score of 260 to pass the Utah Bar Examination.
