The Glasgow composite measure pain scale (CMPS) is a multi-item behavioral pain assessment tool, developed using a psychometric approach, to measure acute pain in the dog (8, 9).
Like the BPI, the Canine BPI items are presented with 0-10 numerical rating scales. For the severity items 0=no pain and 10=extreme pain. For the interference items 0=no interference and 10=completely interferes.
The pain score is the sum of the rank scores, with a maximum score of 24 (20 if mobility is impossible to assess). The total score is a useful indicator of analgesic requirement; the recommended analgesic intervention level is 6/24 (or 5/20).
Guidance for use It includes 28 descriptor options within 7 behavioral categories. Within each category, the descriptors are ranked numerically ing to their associated pain severity and the person carrying out the assessment chooses the descriptor within each category which best fits the cats behavior/condition.
The total CMPS-SF score is a useful indicator of analgesic requirement. The recommended analgesic intervention level is 6/24 or 5/20. Therefore, if an animal scores 6 or above out of 24, or 5 or above out of 20, analgesic administration should be considered.
