The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program provides cash benefits for the care of children in need when one or both parents are absent, disabled, deceased or unemployed. CalWORKs benefits may be extended to qualifying non-citizens who have a child or children in the home.
Is CalWORKs worth it?
Most adults can get CalWORKs for 60 months. Even if you have timed out as an adult, your children can still receive payments. Months when the adult is exempt do not count toward the 60-month time limit.
How much is CalWORKs per month in California?
CalWORKs is among the states most effective anti-poverty programs. The California Poverty Measure (CPM) estimates that, in the absence of CalWORKs, 439,200 more Californians (225,000 adults and 214,200 children) would be in poverty and 186,400 more would be in deep poverty (91,600 adults and 94,900 children).
