EHS shall retain each canceled entry permit for at least one (1) year to facilitate the review of the Confined Space Entry Program.
Atmospheric test data is needed prior to entry into any permit-required confined space. Atmospheric testing is required for two distinct purposes: evaluation of the hazards of the permit space and verification that acceptable conditions exist for entry into that space.
Before anyone may enter the space, an authorized supervisor must also review and sign an entry permit that specifies the purpose and duration, the names of the entry team members, hazards and controls specific to the confined space, PPE and equipment, the supervisors signature and rescue resources.
OSHA requires roofing contractors to evaluate their workplaces to determine if any spaces are to be classified as permit-required confined spaces. If permit-required confined spaces are present, contractors must mark each entry point with a sign reading DANGERPERMIT-REQUIRED CONFINED SPACE. DO NOT ENTER.
Before anyone enters a confined space, the atmosphere must be tested using equipment designed to detect chemicals and gases that may be present. The tests should be conducted at levels well below the defined exposure limits and carried out by someone trained and knowledgeable on the use of gas meters.
