Emotion support animals (ESA) Students who wish to have an ESA in their residence hall or apartment first must register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) to obtain approval for the animal. This approval is limited to one ESA and is granted for only the period of the students current contract.
The first step is to complete the Service Animal and Partner Registration Form and call the DRC at (706) 542-8719 to schedule a registration appointment. If a student needs captions for their registration meeting, they should request that when scheduling their appointment.
ADR COMMENT: Georgia only grants public access rights for service dogs in training to individuals with proper credentials for an accredited school for assistance dogs and the animal must be wearing identification for the school.
The only way to qualify for an emotional support animal in Georgia is by obtaining an ESA letter from a Georgia licensed healthcare professional.
Documentation can be submitted electronically via the AIM Student Portal, or by emailing drc@uga.edu. Paper copies can be submitted by fax at 706-542-7719, or in person at Clark Howell Hall / 825 South Lumpkin St. Once you have completed your application, it will be reviewed by the DRC Intake Team.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL ACCESS: ESAs are not allowed to accompany persons with disabilities in public areas of UGA. ESAs are allowed in a students [2] assigned University Housing unit after approval has been received from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) and said approval is provided to University Housing.
However, registration is entirely voluntary. If you choose to register your service animal, please contact the DRC at 706-542-8719 to speak with a service animal coordinator about completing the registration process.
To fall under this provision, you must have a disability and you must have a disability-related need for the animal. In other words, the animal must work, perform tasks or services, or alleviate the emotional effects of your disability in order to qualify.
