In the current BJCP scoring systems, each beer is evaluated on a 50- point scale, allocating 12 points for Aroma, 3 for Appearance, 20 for Flavor, 5 for Mouthfeel and 10 for Overall Impression.
Beers in competitions are judged based on how accurately they exemplify the style. The judges will be reading the style sheet over and over as they taste beers and comparing the beer they are drinking with the guidelines.
A Rank Pending judge is just that; a judge whose rank is pending. Rank Pending is not a BJCP rank; it is a term used on scoresheets to identify someone who has taken the exam but not yet received results. An Affiliated judge is an Apprentice Judge who did not become a full member by passing a Judging Exam.
Each beer is scored on a 100 point scale, with 20 points allocated to scoring accuracy and 80 points allocated to scoresheet comments.
The ranks include Apprentice, Recognized, Certified, National, Master, Grand Master (with incremental levels, for example Grand Master I, Grand Master II, etc.), and Honorary Grand Master. The BJCP also certifies judges in mead and cider.
