Hundreds of students and faculty members were left stunned on Friday by the news that the Art Institutes, a system of for-profit colleges, would close its eight remaining campuses across the United States by the end of this month. The system had suffered from low enrollment since the coronavirus pandemic began.
The US Department of Education (ED) has determined that the federal student loan(s) you received to attend The Art Institute on or after Jan. 1, 2004, and on or before Oct. 16, 2017, are eligible for a full discharge. This means the remaining balance on the eligible loan(s) will be forgiven.
In 2022, the Art Institute was one of 153 institutions included in student loan cancellation due to alleged fraud. The class action was brought by a group of more than 200,000 student borrowers, assisted by the Project on Predatory Student Lending, part of the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School.
The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, along with Iowa and Massachusetts, provided evidence to the U.S. Department of Education. The Art Institutes lured students into expensive degree programs with false promises of employment opportunities.
This institution falsified data, knowingly misled students, and cheated borrowers into taking on mountains of debt without leading to promising career prospects at the end of their studies, the White House wrote in a statement.
