The word Tryout implies that players will be cut or unable to play at their chosen level. Often, a tryout is really a skills assessment, which coaches can use to decide how to assemble balanced, competitive teams for their league.
The overall judges will be looking at standing/running tumbling, jumps/dance and overall impression. All three categories will be combined together for the total score with deductions being taken off the total score.
Highly competitive teams might require full up stunts, rewinds and handspring up stunts. Some schools also look for dancers who can perform a tumbling pass in addition to common skills. Common skills needed at top colleges include quadruple pirouette, aerial (preferably both sides), advanced turns, and advanced jumps.
The first things to look for during tryouts are ability and technique. Of course not everyone will be an experienced cheerleader, and some of your new additions will require more work than others. However, the skill level of your team as a whole will strongly affect your success throughout the year.
Eat the right foods, keep your body well nourished and well hydrated. Keep doing your conditioning exercises unless they give you a workout packet which some schools will. Keep tumbling, practice your cheers, chants and band dances, and make sure you know them well!

Saying things like, ``I know youve worked hard, now show them what you can do! and ``Youre prepared, dont worry, just have fun! is infinitely more helpful than running through a litany of what-ifs with your child: ``What if the coaches dont like you? What if you dont make the A team?
Taking the time to prepare mentally and physically will help you have the best tryout that you can. First, youll want to get in shape, start a workout plan, and set goals for the skills you want to do at tryouts. Research the team and ask past members about any questions that you might have.
What happens at tryouts: Coaches and captains are looking for new squad members who will work well with the team. They ask about previous cheer, dance, and/or gymnastics experience. If you have cheered before, theyll ask you about stunting and tumbling and may ask you to demonstrate. If you havent, have no fear.
