Three versions of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale are available for use in clinical practice. The Lifetime/Recent version allows practitioners to gather lifetime history of suicidality as well as any recent suicidal ideation and/or behavior.
Providers should use the C-SSRS as a measure of suicidal ideation, intent, or plan, and past suicidal behavior. It can be used to guide appropriate therapeutic intervention and to facilitate safety monitoring and planning.
Originally created as part of a study on decreasing suicide risk among adolescents, the C-SSRS can be used on all patients over the age of 11. The C-SSRS is utilized to identify whether the patient has thought about suicide, has acted or plans to act, or whether they attempted suicide or plan to attempt suicide.
