A family group sheet is another invaluable genealogy form that complements the pedigree chart. While a pedigree chart focuses on a single persons ancestors, a family group sheet concentrates on a single family unit, including the parents and their children.
Family size refers to the number of members within a household, including parents, children, and any extended family.
Under the U.S. Census Bureau definition, family households consist of two or more individuals who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption, although they also may include other unrelated people. Nonfamily households consist of people who live alone or who share their residence with unrelated individuals.
Ive tried several programs, and the best charting for large families is the Gramps relationship graph. This uses Graphviz and can show hundreds of people on a large paper size (A0 or A1).
The easiest way to begin putting together a family tree is to start with a pedigree chart, like the one shown above. The difference between the family tree and the pedigree chart is that the pedigree chart is generally a direct lineage chart that shows only your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.

The most basic version uses boxes to represent each family member and lines to depict their relationships. A bracket is used to depict marriage, and the lower boxes from that bracket represent the children. You can add as many details as youd like to each box, including important dates and places.
