History. First granted in 1733 as Lower Ashuelot, Swanzey was one of the fort towns established by Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts, which then claimed the territory. The town was the site of many battles during King Georges War, and in 1747 it was abandoned for three years.
The Town Forest was dedicated on May 5, 1916 during the Arbor Day celebrations. The highlight of this day in Walpole was the turnout of nearly 2,000 townspeople and the first planting of the new forest by hundreds of children. The first tree was planted by a future president of the United States, then-Lt. Gov.
History. The town was first granted in 1736 by colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts as Number 3, third in a line of Connecticut River fort towns. It was settled as early as 1736, and called Great Falls or Lunenburg.
