The Department of Social Services (DSS) is required to investigate if they receive a report that a child has been mistreated. More particularly, DSS is looking for evidence of abuse, neglect, or dependency.
The Investigation Interviews - The caseworker will either call or visit your home to interview you, the alleged perpetrator, the child, or other members of the family or household. While the caseworker may want to interview your child alone, they are usually required to record the interview.
The objective of the assessment is to collect information and analyse the needs of the child or children and/or their family, as well as the nature and level of any risk of harm to the child or children. Each local authority will have its own child protection procedure and assessment protocols.
The investigation includes a records review, interview of the child and of professionals known to the family. Home visits are usually included although this varies depending on state regulations. The investigative team also assesses the childs danger of harm and determines if the risk of maltreatment.
How long does it take DSS to investigate? What happens when a DSS is completed? The local DSS will attempt to complete the above investigation within 10 days of receiving the initial report, and if additional time is required due to additional circumstances, they will move to complete the investigation within 60 days.
