Applicants to the General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom who hold a primary medical qualification awarded outside the UK need to have certain medical qualifications independently verified by ECFMG, a division of Intealth, before the GMC will grant registration.
The USMLE is accepted by the GMC as evidence that a physician has the appropriate skills and knowledge required to be granted registration with a license to practise, however, other eligibility criteria must also be met.
Once you are ready to apply make your application through GMC Online. Summary. Evidence of your primary medical qualification. Evidence of your internship or experience. Demonstrating your knowledge of English. Your passport. Your certificate of good standing. Your activities for the last five years.
By phone. You can contact the GMC between 9:00am-5:00pm (BST), Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). There is one general telephone number you can docHub the GMC on, and this is +44 (0)161 923 6602.
GMC credentials bring assured training and regulatory oversight to areas where consistent clinical standards, recognised across the UK, are necessary for better patient care, or where patients are at risk due to workforce gaps, limited clinical governance or other factors that cannot safely be addressed in other ways.

All doctors intending to practise medicine in the UK are required to be registered with the GMC, follow the GMCs good medical practice guidance and be subject to the GMC Fitness to Practise actions. Doctors who hold registration but not a licence may be working as an academic or outside the UK.
Many physicians trained in the USA can now register to work in the UK using their USMLE licensure. Whilst it is not a qualification, the GMC now accepts the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) as evidence of the appropriate skills and knowledge required to be granted registration with a license to practice.
