The National Center for Health Statistics recommends that the U.S. 2000 standard population be used when calculating age-adjusted rates. However, if you compare rates from different sources, it is very important that you use the same standard population on both sides of your comparison.
Age-standardisation is a technique used to enhance the comparability of event rates from different populations or different sub-populations over time by making adjustments for the confounding effects of differences in age structure between the populations being compared.
Direct and indirect methods of standardization address confounding when comparing the rate of a given outcome (like mortality) between two populations that differ for important prognostic factors (like age, gender and social-economical status). These two methods are used for both descriptive and analytical purposes.
Age standardisation is a process of adjusting for a populations rate of injury to account for changes in the age structure of the population over time. Age standardised rates provide an estimate of an individuals average annual risk of being injured.
Procedure for direct standardization Multiply the age-specific mortality rates of the other population under study to the number of persons in each age group of the standard population. By this way, you will get the expected deaths for each age group of each population.
Traditionally, there are two methods of standardisation: direct and indirect standardisation. In direct standardisation (chapter 2), for each population, the distribution of the distorting characteristics in the standard population is used.
Direct age-adjustment (or age standardization) is the same as calculating a weighted average. It weights the age-specific rates observed in a population of interest by the proportion of each age group in a standard population (Lilienfeld Stolley, 1994).
In the calculation of the age-standardized rate, either one population is mathematically adjusted to have the same age structure as the other; or both populations are mathematically adjusted to have the same age structure as a third population, called the standard population 3.
Definition: The age-standardized mortality rate is a weighted average of the age-specific mortality rates per 100 000 persons, where the weights are the proportions of persons in the corresponding age groups of the WHO standard population.
