In your document, click where you want to insert the note reference mark. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.
Arrange the references in chronological order by date of publication eg. 1996, 2006, starting with the earliest date. Use a lower-case letter after the publication date, eg. 2017a, 2017b, to differentiate between works written in the same year by the same author, and list them alphabetically by title.
Go to Sort Order under Bibliography. Here, select the sort order you would like to use or click Other to choose additional sorting options. Once you have made your changes, close the style window, click Yes to save the changes, and reformat your bibliography in Word to see the changes.
Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.
Changing the Way Footnotes Are Numbered Make sure the References tab is selected on the ribbon. Click the small downward-pointing arrow at the lower-right corner of the Footnotes group. Make sure the Footnotes radio button is selected. Change the Start At value to reflect where you want Word to start numbering.
Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
When citations are added to a comment, these citations will be shown to EndNote first, making them appear at the beginning of the numbered bibliography. To resolve this issue, simply delete the citation within the comment, or delete the comment altogether.
