The eqnarray environment lets you align equations so that, for example, all of the equals signs = line up. To do this, put ampersand signs around the text you want LaTeX to align, e.g. Each equation can be labelled separately, just put the label command after the relevant equation.
Why is the equation editor selection grayed out? You may have saved your document in a format that does not support the Equation Editor. Try selecting File Save As and save the document as a . docx file or File Convert to update the document to the latest format.
MathType is better at typing out a math document if you had little to no knowledge of LaTex. Equatio does a much better job of transcribing existing math even if only one line at a time.
