Playing the radio in your business is classed as a public performance whether this is for your customers, your staff or both. If you are playing the radio, or other channels from a TV in your business, a TV licence allows you to receive the broadcast signal to the television within your business.
The license term for a new or renewed grant is 10 years and a copy must be kept with the aircrafts station records. You may file for renewal beginning 90 days prior to the expiration date of your license.
No, you do not need a TV Licence to listen to the radio (including on BBC Sounds).
When to get permission. If you perform music, play recorded music on the radio, or stream (non-interactive) online, you need to obtain a public performance license. Artists typically do not need to secure public performance rights for radio because they are covered by the station.
Applying for a GMRS license is easy, does not require any kind of test, and it takes only a few minutes. A license does cost $35, but covers your whole family and is good for 10 years.
Playing the downloaded music in your business, however, would violate copyright law because the act is now considered a public performance. You must license music for commercial use. Public performances require a Public Performance License (PPL) from performing rights organizations (PROs).
An FCC license is required to operate GMRS system. Licenses are issued for a ten-year term and can be renewed between 90 days prior to the expiration date and up to the actual expiration date of the license.
A GMRS individual license extends to immediate family members and authorizes them to use the licensed system. GMRS license holders are allowed to communicate with FRS users on those frequencies that are shared between the two services. GMRS individual licenses do not extend to employees.
Listening to such music on a personal use basis, through headphones, is completely legal in the workplace. Anyone can listen to their own music in this way. But playing such music through speakers to your employees - or to the public - in a work environment is illegal unless you have the appropriate licence.
How to Obtain a License. Submit FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates to apply. (You do NOT need to submit FCC Form 159 (fee processing form) or any fees.) Many Commercial Operator License Examination Managers (COLEMs) file these documents for applicants who test with them.
