After watching this video, you will know how to insert footnotes and endnotes in Word and how to change the style of these notes. Inserting a footnote is quite easy. We click into text, at the position where we want to insert the reference to the footnote. Then we go to the References tab and click on Insert Footnotes. As we can see, Word will automatically insert a line at the end of the page and also the number 1 since it is our first footnote. Here we can now write our referencing text. When we go back to the content, we can see that the referencing number is also inserted where we first placed our cursor. Of course, we can insert more footnotes on a single page. Word will simply make room for them at the end of the page. Inserting an endnote works the same way. We again click into the text, where we want the reference to the endnote to be inserted. In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and authors name along with other information related to the type of citation.
At the bottom of a page, right-click the footnote text area, click Note Options, and then click Convert. Finally, click Convert all footnotes to endnotes. To convert one footnote to an endnote: At the bottom of the page, right-click the text of a footnote, and then click Convert to Endnote.
Add an endnote Click where you want to add an endnote. Click References Insert Endnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the endnote mark at the end of the document. Type the endnote text. Tip: To return to your place in your document, double-click the endnote mark.
The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the authors name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).
Endnotes are single-spaced with double-spaced between. Each first footnote or endnote entry must include the authors name, the title, the source or publisher, and the date of publication. Entries from a book or periodical must include page numbers. (Omit portions of this information only if it is not available.)
Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.
To break up footnotes in Word: Select your footnote. Right-click and press Paragraph. Select the Line and Page Breaks tab. Uncheck the Keep lines together checkbox.
If you do place a note in the middle of a sentence, for example at the end of a quotation, the number should always come before a dash. Notes should always end with a full stop.
In the Footnotes group, click the small icon at the bottom-right. In the resulting Footnote and Endnote dialog box, click the Endnotes option. Choose End of Section from the Endnotes dropdown list. Click Apply.
On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.
