Horsetooth Mountain Open Space requires entrance permits, is open year round, and is located west of Horsetooth Reservoir, 4 miles from Fort Collins and 12 miles northwest of Loveland. Horsetooth Mountain Open Space main trailhead is closed 11 p.m.-4 a.m.; Soderberg Open Space Trailhead is open sunrise to sunset.
Six and one-half miles of water beckon visitors to come out and play! Surrounded by 1,900 acres of public lands, this reservoir has it all: fishing, boating, camping, picnicking, swimming, scuba diving, rock climbing, and water skiing.
This reservoir was the largest created during the Colorado-Big Thompson project. Building was finished in 1949 and water first entered the reservoir in 1951. Horsetooth was given its name because of an Arapaho legand that on the west side of the reservoir at the top of a mountain.
Swimming is permitted in Horsetooth Reservoir in two places. The South Bay day use area has pretty much everything, from a boat launch to camping to scuba and swimming. Further north, on the east side of the Reservoir is Sunrise day use area. Swimming, and other day use activities are also allowed here.
