So imagine that you have a school report that youre working on, or maybe youre turning in a project for work, and youve got lots of pages and lots of sections in there. Well, a table of contents can make it easier to get back to the content that people want to refer back to. So how do you do that? Its actually easier than you think. And Ive pulled up a sample school report here. I know Ive been out of school for a little while, but brings back memories when I jump into this. Lets jump on my PC and Ill show you how to do this. Go to the REFERENCES tab and click Table of Contents. Then, choose which automatic table style you want, and click. And Word instantly creates a table of contents, based on your styled headings.
On the toolbar ribbon, select References. Near the left end, select Insert Table of Contents. (Or select Table of Contents Insert Table of Contents. The table of contents is inserted, showing the headings and page numbering in your document.
In the existing table of contents, determine where you want to add an entry. Then, place the text cursor at the end of the entry above where you want the new entry. Press the Enter key to add a new blank line in the table of contents. Type the text for the new entry.
To put a blank page into your Word document, place the cursor where you want the new page to begin and then click Insert Blank Page.
Click References Table of Contents and then choose an Automatic Table of Contents style from the list. Note: If you use a Manual Table of Contents style, Word wont use your headings to create a table of contents and wont be able to update it automatically.
Press Enter if the table is at the top of the document; press Ctrl-Shift-Enter if the table is at the top of a section. In either case, this creates a blank line directly above the table.
Update a table of contents Click anywhere in the table of contents. Press F9 or the Update Table button in the content control (or on the REFERENCES tab) Use the Update Table of Contents dialog box to choose what to update. Click OK.
Align text in a cell Select the cells that have the text you want aligned. On the Home tab choose one of the following alignment options: To vertically align text, pick Top Align , Middle Align , or Bottom Align . To horizontally align text, pick Align Text Left , Center , or Align Text Right .
Add captions Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation.
List the headings of the document in order. Start by listing the headings of each section in the document in order. Include only the major titles or headings in the document first. Write them down vertically on the page, using the same font and font size for each heading.
