Wiping stains are a traditional method of adding color to wood, and they are called "wiping" stains because of the way the stain is spread and removed. Stains can be applied with a rag, brush, or spray equipment, with spraying being the quickest and least wasteful method. If using spray equipment, start on the back side of the piece and spray an even wet coat, then repeat on the front side starting with the edges.
