worksheet troubleshooting and worksheet auditing are difficult tasks if performed manually excel has some keystroke shortcuts some techniques for helping you figure out the implications for example of changing a cells content this is a particularly unwieldy worksheet got lots of different formulas and interrelationships maybe youve looked at it for five or ten minutes youve come to realize that cell b3 is pretty important and youre wondering if you change that which other cells will change so for example you might click on cell e5 double click or look in the formula bar it directly relates back to b3 how about cell f12 that does too about cell e13 well that doesnt say b3 but it does refer to b8 does b8 refer to b3 lets go to b8 looks like that doesnt but we could have some layers here of dependencies lets go down to this cell that doesnt refer to b3 but it refers to e17 e18 does one of those refer back to b3 you start to gather the the idea here that this is not exactly going

Trace cells that provide data to a formula (precedents) Select the cell that contains the formula for which you want to find precedent cells. To display a tracer arrow to each cell that directly provides data to the active cell, on the Formulas tab, in the Formula Auditing group, click Trace Precedents .
This example uses the Trace Precedents feature to help fix the error. Select the cell with the #VALUE! error. Click the Trace Precedents button on the Formulas tab. Locate the cell thats causing the error. Correct the formula in the formula bar. Click or press Enter.
The Trace Error button appears next to the cell in which a formula error occurs, and a green triangle appears in the upper-left corner of the cell.
Open your workbook to a sheet that contains cells with precedents or dependents. Select the cell in which you want to check precedents and/or dependents. Click the Trace Precedents or Trace Dependents button in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab.
Clicking the Trace Dependents button more than once will show all the cells that are related to the active cell that you are evaluating. To remove the tracer arrows, click the arrow next to the Remove Arrows button under the Formulas Auditing tool and click Remove Dependent Arrows.
How to Use Error Checking With the file that contains the errors open in Excel, in the Ribbon, select Formula Formula Auditing Error Checking. In the Error Checking dialog box, click Show Calculation Steps. Click Evaluate to evaluate the error.
