Information obtained from the tests indicates that the average diameter of the voids in concrete may vary from about 0.1 mm. in normal concrete to less than half that size m air-entrained concrete.
Entrained air should fall between 4% and 7% of the concretes volume. For concrete that will be regularly exposed to freeze/thaw cycles, aim for 6%. Anything less than 4% would not have the durability needed to last through multiple winters. Be careful not to go overboard with air entrainment, however.
Air Content Testing: Why is it Important Most non-air-entrained concrete contains between 1% and 2% entrapped air, and other admixtures may unintentionally entrain even more air.
Over time, the most common recommendations for acceptable air void content have been in the 3-8% range. For example, Seeds et al. (2002) concluded a good construction target was 5-6%, Cominsky et al.
The basic approach, using the plane- intercept method, was to pass a plane through the concrete and measure the di- ameters of the circles transcribed vihea the plane intercepted voids and then, by a mathematical analysis of the data obtained, determine the properties of the entrained voids.
The void spot assay (VSA), also known as voiding spot on paper (VSOP) assay, is performed by placing a single mouse in an enclosure lined with absorbent filter paper and allowing the mouse to move freely for a defined period, during which micturition events are captured and retained as void spots on paper.
Entrained air refers to microscopic air bubbles intentionally incorporated into concrete during mixing, usually by use of a surface-active agent. These bubbles are spherical with diameters between 0.0004 and 0.04 in. (0.01 and 1 mm).
Over time, the most common recommendations for acceptable air void content have been in the 3-8% range. For example, Seeds et al. (2002) concluded a good construction target was 5-6%, Cominsky et al.
