today i want to talk about pointers specifically pointers that dont have type information are also known as void pointers [Music] hey everybody welcome back todays video is for the beginners for fairly beginner programmers out there who think that youve finally wrapped your head around pointers but then you see something like this and youre not really sure what to make of it because this causes a serious moment of pause for a lot of beginners so i thought today we would talk about it talk about what a void pointer is why you might want to use one and well also talk about some examples where you may have already used a void pointer and you just didnt realize it also at the end im going to talk a little bit about a subtle difference between c and c plus plus might save you some time but first a big thank you to all of you who support this channel through patreon buying merch and online classes also for those of you that are curious about where you can get example code from my vid

The size of void pointer varies system to system. If the system is 16-bit, size of void pointer is 2 bytes. If the system is 32-bit, size of void pointer is 4 bytes. If the system is 64-bit, size of void pointer is 8 bytes.
Why do we use a void pointer in C programs? We use the void pointers to overcome the issue of assigning separate values to different data types in a program. The pointer to void can be used in generic functions in C because it is capable of pointing to any data type.
Size of the Void Pointer in C For 32-bit systems, the size of a void pointer is 4 bytes, and if the system is 64-bit, then the size of the void pointer will be 8 bytes.
Void functions are created and used just like value-returning functions except they do not return a value after the function executes. In lieu of a data type, void functions use the keyword void. A void function performs a task, and then control returns back to the caller--but, it does not return a value.
The malloc() and calloc() function return the void pointer, so these functions can be used to allocate the memory of any data type.
The pointer to void can be used in generic functions in C because it is capable of pointing to any data type. One can assign the void pointer with any data types address, and then assign the void pointer to any pointer without even performing some sort of explicit typecasting. So, it reduces complications in a code.
void (C++) When used as a function return type, the void keyword specifies that the function doesnt return a value. When used for a functions parameter list, void specifies that the function takes no parameters. When used in the declaration of a pointer, void specifies that the pointer is universal.
When you do pointer arithmetic adding or removing one unit means adding or removing the object pointed to size. Thus defining sizeof(void)as 1 helps defining void* as a pointer to byte (untyped memory address).
A pointer to a function points to the address of the executable code of the function. You can use pointers to call functions and to pass functions as arguments to other functions.
In computer programming, when void is used as a function return type, it indicates that the function does not return a value. When void appears in a pointer declaration, it specifies that the pointer is universal.
