This episode is sponsored by Skillshare Explorers have found life in the deepest, driest, darkest, hottest, and coldest corners of our planet. As resilient as life seems to harsh environments, maybe we might find some in space, and if not, maybe we can make some. In this episode, were going to talk about lifeforms in space, specifically about the evolutionary pathways that could lead to lifeforms that can live there, we will explore more artificial or designed life in future episodes, starting with Space Whales and Bioships this Thursday. At first glance, life evolving in space seems implausible. We tend to think of space as a cold, lifeless vacuumor perhaps a blazing hot, lethally irradiated, lifeless vacuum. But weve always been tentative about the lifeless part, because life has surprised us in many environments. Extraterrestrial life of even the crudest forms would confirm some important theories about how life originated, and it would create a new zeal for searching all the rem

The Solar System floats in the middle of a peculiarly empty region of space. This region of low-density, high-temperature plasma, about 1,000 light-years across, is surrounded by a shell of cooler, denser neutral gas and dust.
The key thing is that voids are not empty, they are just large volumes which have a lower density (typically around 10% of average) compared with the rest of the universe. These low density areas still contain stars and galaxies, just fewer of them and the galaxies they contain tend to be smaller.
A team of researchers says the Milky Way resides in one of the observable universes darkest regions, but some experts arent so sure. Dont panic. Cosmic voids are actually all around us.
Our Galaxy Is Also Surrounded By A Void Not only is the inside of the Milky Way home to a big void, but chances are were also surrounded by one. This is known as a Local Void, and likely surrounds the outside of the Milky Way galaxy. However, our galaxy tends to move towards areas with more density.
Astronomers have previously noticed that the Milky Way sits in a large, flat array of galaxies called the Local Sheet, which bounds the Local Void. The Local Void extends approximately 60 megaparsecs (200 Mly), beginning at the edge of the Local Group.
The Botes Void (/boʊˈoʊtiːz/ boh-OH-teez) (colloquially referred to as the Great Nothing) is an approximately spherical region of space found in the vicinity of the constellation Botes, containing very few galaxies, hence its name. It is enormous, with a radius of 62 megaparsecs.
We are not living in a galactic void, but rather along a filament/surface of clusters running roughly between the Perseus supercluster and the Virgo/Laniakea supercluster. We are however living near the edge of the Local Void.
The Milky Way Galaxy is in a cosmic void named the KBC Void. Some popular applications are mentioned in detail below.
