The choropleth map seen below of San Bernardino county population density uses random dots in this manner. Dot density maps, on the other hand, show the geographic density distribution of a phenomenon by placing dots representing a certain quantity of the phenomenon where they are most likely to occur.
A dot distribution map (or a dot density map or simply a dot map) is a type of thematic map that uses a point symbol to visualize the geographic distribution of a large number of related phenomena.
What is a dot map? Dot maps are a form of map design that uses dots to show the density of a particular phenomenon in an area. While more dots within a given area represents a higher value, fewer dots indicate a lower value or density.
Once you have defined attribute-driven symbology for a layer, you can review and update the settings on the Symbology pane for the layer. In the Contents pane, highlight a feature layer. On the Feature Layer tab, in the Drawing group, click Symbology . In the Symbology pane, click the Vary symbology by attribute tab.
Dot maps or dot distribution map (also known as dot density map) is a map type that uses a dot symbol to show the presence of a feature or phenomenon. Dot maps rely on a visual scatter to show spatial patterns.
Dot density symbology is one way to represent quantities in polygons on a map. With dot density symbology, the data you symbolize is not classified. Instead, quantitative values for one or more fields are represented as a collection of point symbols (typically solid circles or dots) in each polygon.
Create Dot Density map In the left panel, that is table of content of the layers; do right click on layer Administrative Boundary . Click on the pop up menu: Properties. In the Layers Properties dialog, choose Symbology Tab. Select Show Quantities Dot Density. For Field Selection click: PopAdmin, then click button.
One of the disadvantages of dot density maps is that its difficult to extract quantities from them. For graduated symbols or proportional symbols, its easy to estimate value based on the size of the symbol. But for dot-density maps, its tedious to count small-sized dots for a large quantity.
