Hey this is Marty from Blue lightning TV. Im going to show you how to create a stunning dot pattern portrait from a photo. Open a photo of someone or something that youd like to use for this project. I downloaded this one from Shutterstock. Before we begin, smash that subscribe button if you havent already. Itll let you know as soon as I upload new photoshop tutorials and quick tips. First, we need to check our photos resolution because later were going to match the resolution of the dot pattern with the resolution of our photo. To check its size and resolution, press Ctrl + Alt + I on Windows or Option +Cmd + I on a mac or go to Image and Image Size. Take note of your photos resolution. Next, well convert our photo into a smart object, so we can modify it non-destructively, as well as allow us to replace it with a different photo without having to redo the effects. To do this, click the icon at the upper right of the layers panel and click Convert

Artists at first used cardboard, pieces of wood and even the backs of tiles, which they later replaced with canvas. Geoffrey Bardon stands in front of the mural on a school wall in Papunya, August 1971.

Because Aboriginals had a deep knowledge of the land they had been walking for generations, it is believed that they were simply representing these landscape dots of the land by painting them onto the canvas.
Indigenous art is centered on story telling. It is used as a chronical to convey knowledge of the land, events and beliefs of the Aboriginal people. The use of symbols is an alternate way to writing down stories of cultural significance, teaching survival and use of the land.
A circle or a set of concentric circles usually signify places where people come together. They can represent a meeting place, fireplace, campsite, a waterhole or a ceremonial site. Waterholes are critical to survival in the desert and for that reason they feature frequently in Aboriginal art.
They were purely created by the Aboriginal people who were displaced, and living a long way from their original home country. The works were visual reminders of their own being. They painted land that they belonged to and the stories that are associated with those sites.

Dots were used to in-fill designs. Dots were also useful to obscure certain information and associations that lay underneath the dotting. At this time, the Aboriginal artists were negotiating what aspects of stories were secret or sacred, and what aspect were in the public domain.
