there are many things that can be done to a regular layer that cant be done to a background layer here inside of photoshop for example up under the edit menu if i come down to free transform you can see it is currently grayed out so over here inside of the layers panel i have a single background layer and id like to show you two quick ways to unlock this layer first method simply double click on the background layer the new layer dialog box will appear you can give this thing a name should you choose choose ok its now turned into a regular layer and up under the edit menu but i can see free transform is now available very nice let me undo one step just there a second method even faster than the first the padlock icon within the background layer if you just click on that once it will unlock the layer and you are good to go nice little bonus tip here for you guys if youre working on a big composition lets say youve added multiple layers and for some reason you wish to convert this
