Fast Roaming takes inspiration from Fast BSS Transition (IEEE 802.11r), a wireless protocol amendment that enables access points to quickly verify roaming clients. The result is smooth transitioning across WPA2-Enterprise and WPA2-Personal networks, empowering portable devices.
It is especially important in WiFi networks where Radius Authentication (802.1X) is used. When should it be used? As stated above, if you have a high density WiFi network, use 802.1X (Radius Authentication), voice over IP, and your WiFi clients move around a lot, you definitely should be using 802.11r (Fast Roaming).
You have a multitude of options when using 5GHz Wi-Fi. Channels 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165 can be used with a channel width of 20MHz. Use 38, 46, 151, and 159 if you use a channel width of 40MHz. You can use either 42 or 155 for 80MHz.
Ubiquiti Unifi UAP-AC-HD Access Point The UAP-AC-HD boasts a maximum wireless data rate of 800Mbps on 2.4GHz and 1733Mbps on 5GHz, has a range of up to 125m (400 ft), 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports and support for 500+ wifi users.
As mentioned above, the primary benefit of 802.11r is to docHubly reduce the length of time that connectivity is interrupted between a mobile device and Wi-Fi infrastructure when that mobile device is connecting to a new AP. This is especially useful for real time interactive services (e.g., voice and video).
Even with a local RADIUS server, this exchange can easily take several hundred milliseconds, and far longer if your RADIUS server is not on your LAN, but requires access over the Internet. Thus, fast roaming should ALWAYS be enabled when you are using WPA2 Enterprise security.
5 GHz Wi-Fi: when to use 40 MHz: When we require minimize interference and more throughput in that case we use 40 MHz because 40MHz provides more throughput than 20 Mhz. 5 GHz Wi-Fi: when to use 80 MHz: we use 80 Mhz, when interference is not a big issue, or wi-fi client is close to router but we need more throughput.
The best bandwidth for 5 Ghz is 40 MHz. However, there are other considerations as well.
5GHz supports 20MHz, 40MHz, 80MHz and 160MHz*. When compared to 2.4GHz, there is much more spectrum available, but we should still only specify only as much as we need. Generally, for up to 250-400mbps, 40MHz on 5GHz is more than enough and if you need anything more than that, then consider going up to 80MHz.
In the 5 GHz band, we have channels ranging from 36 up to 165, and in the 6 GHz band, we have Wi-Fi channels ranging from 1-233.
