If no approval rules are defined, any user can approve a merge request, though the default minimum number of required approvers can still be set in the project settings for merge request approvals. You can opt to define one single rule to approve a merge request among the available rules or choose more than one.
The approval process ensures that all the necessary steps take place to complete any approval, while rules govern how the request is handled at various stages of the process. The following figure illustrates the five stages of any approval process.
Approval processes have a limit of 30 steps. An approval process may have up to 25 assigned approvers.
Add an Approval Step to an Approval Process Control Which Records Apply to an Approval Step. Control which records are part of the approval step by setting the steps criteria. Identify Assigned Approvers for an Approval Step. Specify Rejection Behavior for an Approval Step.
Approval processes support four automated actions.
A closed merge request is one that has been put aside or considered irrelevant. It is therefore not merged into the code base. Therefore, you only merge MRs when youre happy with the changes and close them if you think the changes are not worthy of being integrated into the code base ever.
Merge request approvals Enforcing review of all code that gets merged into a repository. Specifying code maintainers for an entire repository. Specifying reviewers for a given proposed code change. Specifying categories of reviewers, such as BE, FE, QA, DB, etc., for all proposed code changes.
For the given merge request, if the required number of approvals has been met (i.e., the number of approvals given to the merge request is greater or equal than the required number), then the merge request is unblocked and can be merged.
When a record is submitted for approval, its locked to prevent users from editing it during the approval process.
I find the limit of 15 approval steps in an approval process restrictive. We have some reasonably complex approval processes which require multiple people to approve a request. As approvals cannot be sent in parallel, we need to code our approvers as sequential steps.
