As mentioned above, the techniques used for fabrication fixed prosthesis impressions are numerous including the following: (1) the copper band technique, (2) the single viscosity technique (monophase technique), (3) the single-step technique or dual viscosity technique (in which impression materials of 2 viscosities
Open-tray impressions provide the most accurate capture of implants intraorally, especially when implants will be splinted prosthetically.
Although no impression material provides perfect accuracy, four types of elastomeric impression materials are generally used for implant impressions: polysulfide, condensation silicone, additional silicone (polyvinyl siloxane) and polyether.
The most preferred impression materials in implant dentistry are polyether and vinyl poly-siloxane [7, 9]. The impression material used in the open-tray impression technique must show sufficient rigidity to maintain the position of the impression coping and prevent it from being displaced during removal from the mouth.
With implant copings the coping is usually attached to the implant or abutment with screws. The impression material used is usually an elastomeric impression material; the two types most widely used and shown to be the most appropriate are polyether and polyvinyl siloxane impression materials.
Two types of impression compounds are available - Type 1 which is low fusing with a fusion temperature of approximately. Above 45C and Type 2 which is high fusing with a fusion temperature of approximately above 70C. It is manipulated in a temperature controlled water bath or air bath or open flame.
Impression techniques for implant restorations can be implant level or abutment level impressions with open tray or closed tray techniques.
What can you do: Support tray until impression material is sufficiently set. Stabilize the tray after seating, avoid any movements. When taking an impression of the upper jaw, you can easily find support on the chin or cheek bone of the patient.
