What is the difference between TIFF and PNG files? Both PNGs and TIFFs are excellent choices for displaying complex images. But PNGs tend to be smaller in size, so are potentially better suited for websites. TIFFs, on the other hand, are often the best choice for professional use, scanning, and print options.
TIFF is uncompressed. Since TIFF does not use any compression algorithms like JPEG or GIF formats, the file contains more data and results in a more detailed picture.
TIFF is lossless, similar to RAW and DNG formats are based on a version of TIFF. While TIFF produces exceptionally detailed images, it has a much larger file size than DNG format and doesnt have nearly as many compatible programs. In the vast majority of cases, DNG is a better format option than TIFF.
A PNG will generally be larger than a JPEG, and sometimes smaller than a TIFF. Interestingly, it was originally developed to replace the GIF, but the formats are drastically different, and both have a place in todays computer environments. PNG supports more colors than GIF images as well as improved transparency.
Because of their different compression processes, JPEGs contain less data than PNGs and therefore, are usually smaller in size. Unlike JPEGs, PNGs support transparent backgrounds, making them preferred for graphic design.
The biggest advantage of PNG over JPEG is that the compression is lossless, meaning there is no loss in quality each time it is opened and saved again. PNG also handles detailed, high-contrast images well.
A DNG is a type of RAW file. docHub developed it to try and standardise all the different RAW file formats. Some camera manufacturers use DNGs as their RAW formats already, including Leica, Hasselblad, Pentax and Ricoh.
A TIFF, or tagged image file format, is a lossless raster format hailed for its extremely high image quality. Often the format used by professionals in creative industries, these files require a large amount of storage space and are a challenge to share unless zipped or sent using file-sharing tools.
PNG is a high-quality graphics format generally higher in quality than JPEGs, which are compressed to save space. The PNG format uses lossless compression and is generally considered a replacement to the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF format).
Its widely accepted that TIFF files are great for editing and storing photos that will be printed, either in terms of detailed photo prints or magazine work, since they preserve all of the quality that originally comes with images taken straight from a camera.
