Well, a table of contents can make it easier to get back to the content that people want to refer back to. So how do you do that? Its actually easier than you think. And Ive pulled up a sample school report here. I know Ive been out of school for a little while, but brings back memories when I jump into this. Lets jump on my PC and Ill show you how to do this. Update a table of contents Go to References Update Table. Select one of the following: Update page numbers only This only updates the pages that the headings are on, and ignores any changes to the heading text. Select OK.
Go to References Table of Contents. Select Custom table of contents. Use the settings to show, hide, and align page numbers, add or change the tab leader, set formats, and specify how many levels of headings to show.
Format the text in your table of contents Go to References Table of Contents Custom Table of Contents. Select Modify. In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify. In the Modify Style pane, make your changes. Select OK to save changes.

The problem is that only if the entire paragraph is formatted as a heading will it be included in the TOC. The easiest way to make sure that you apply the Linked heading style to the entire paragraph is to NOT select any word or phrase in the heading paragraph.
Go to References tab Table of Contents Custom Table of Contents Modify Select to Highlight TOC2 (or the applicable level you need to fix) Modify Format Tabs Clear ALL OK. Back on Modify screen for TOC2 (or applicable level you need to fix): Click the Increase Indent button.
You can change the TOC styles after generating the TOC, but when you later regenerate, the TOC will again appear messed up. The only solution to this problem is to make sure that none of your headings use explicit formatting; they should rely only on styles.
Go to References Table of Contents. and choose an automatic style. If you make changes to your document that affect the table of contents, update the table of contents by right-clicking the table of contents and choosing Update Field.
The TOC field may have been locked. Try selecting the Table of Contents and then press CTRL+SHIFT+F11 (unlock field) and see if you can then update the Table of Contents.
If youve manually applied formatting to any of your titles, they might show up in the TOC. But a title in a document with a Title heading (or Subtitle heading) generally wont appear in the TOC (or outline). Instead, use only Headings 1-6 for your titles.
