okay were going to look at inserting a header and then changing the header part way through the document so that it looks different to do that we will have to insert a section break into the document we will then be able to format the header and footer if you so wish into format each one differently so they look different in different parts of the document the first thing Im going to do is move my mouse and the cursor up to the top of the document where the header would be and double click this is an easy way to access the header after double-clicking you will see that the focus comes on to the header and the cursor is flashing ready for you to enter some information so Im just going to type header one by clicking or double clicking outside of the header that will bring the focus back on to the document youll notice as I scroll through the document that the word header one is repeated at the header of each page of the document as I go through to the end Here I am on page two now a

In most cases, when you cant edit the header or footer, the reason is that the content isnt supported for editing in Word Online. You should be able to download the document to your local drive, though.
Headers and footers are only visible in Print Layout view and Print Preview. To indicate when the headers and footers are not active, the information contained within them appears greyed out or faded.
Double-click the header or footer area to open the Header Footer tab. Select Link to Previous to turn off the link between the sections. Select Header or Footer and do one of the following: Choose Remove Header or Remove Footer .
Go to Layout Page Setup Header Footer. Under Header or Footer, on the pop-up menu, select (none).
Editing headers and footers. After you close the header or footer, it will still be visible, but it will be locked. Simply double-click a header or footer to unlock it, which will allow you to edit it.
Add a standard or customized header or footer Go to Insert Header or Footer. Choose from a list of standard headers or footers, go to the list of Header or Footer options, and select the header or footer that you want. When youre done, select Close Header and Footer or press Esc.
Click the File tab and then click Info in the left pane. Click Protect Document and choose Restrict Editing from the dropdown (Figure C). Word will return to the document and display the editing options in the Restrict Editing pane. Check the second option and choose No Changes (Read Only) from the dropdown (Figure D).
