Buffalo Trace Distillery Introduces Old Charter Oak Series Aged 10 Years in Canadian Oak Barrels. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) requires distillers to age their whiskey inside a new charred oak container in order to legally call it bourbon.
In 1974, the 1,000,000th barrel of Old Charter was bottled and a case was given by the Governor of Kentucky (Wendell Ford) to the Governor of Texas (Dolph Briscoe) as a gift. In 1987, United Distillers acquired Schenley. In 1999, the Old Charter brand was purchased by the Sazerac Company from Diageo.
The Old Charter brand changed owners a few times, until it was purchased by Buffalo Trace Distillery in 1999. The existing Old Charter Bourbon is still produced by parent company Sazerac and there are no plans to discontinue it.
Bourbon is always whiskey, but whiskey is not always bourbon. Bourbon has important distinctions that differentiate it from whiskey: it has to be made in the United States from at least 51% corn, be aged in new, charred American white oak barrels, and the finished product must be at least 80 proof.
The collection was sold off in the 1980s after Schenleys founder, Louis Rosenstiel sold the company. The brand became part of the United Distillers portfolio in 1987. United Distillers introduced the 13 year old Old Charter Proprietors Reserve in 1994 as part of their Bourbon Heritage Collection.
An all-around solid whiskey that any bourbon drinker can appreciate. TASTING NOTES: A complex, well-balanced nose that shows both dry, peppery notes and a rich honey sweetness. The palate features some tingly spice notes and mellow toffee, very long and very satisfying finish.
$899.99. Old Charter Oak French Oak - Old Charter Oak French Oak was aged twelve years at Buffalo Trace Distillery and features a rich and sweet, drawing its character from barrels made of French Oak.
Old Charter changed owners a few times, until it was purchased by Buffalo Trace Distillery in 1999. The existing Old Charter Bourbon is still produced by parent company Sazerac and there are no plans to discontinue it.
Old Charter 10 Year Old was discontinued in 2013 and Old Charter 8 Year Old in 2014.
Do They Still Make Old Charter Bourbon? Old Charter Bourbon, manufactured by Sazerac, is still available as of now and will not be discontinued. This series is a new upscale extension for the company, in the same way that its E. H. Taylor, Jr line was.
